The Minnesota Timberwolves continue to play a competitive brand of basketball that usually gives them a chance to win games down the stretch. But actually closing out those games with a win remains an issue.

The Wolves had a busy schedule this past week with five games which ended with two wins and three losses. Minnesota began the week with a win over the Washington Wizards (93-72) to begin a stretch of three games in three days. The other two games didn't go as well, with Minnesota losing at Toronto (97-87) and then at home against the Eastern Conference-leading Chicago Bulls (111-100).

After a couple of days off, the Timberwolves hit the road to finish the week with a win over the New Orleans Hornets (87-80) and a tough, two-point loss to the Atlanta Hawks (93-91). The Hawks games seemed to best symbolize Minnesota's struggles as they had an 18-point lead late in the third quarter only to let it slip away.

The losses are starting to get frustrating for the folks at Canis Hoopus as Minnesota struggles to get consistent production any players other than Kevin Love and Ricky Rubio.

The days of me giving extra credit for effort are done. Effort alone, like moral victories, no longer means anything to me because even as effort can be beneficial, it can be detrimental (i.e.- Jonny Flynn or Wes Johnson). Sometimes I think it would be better if they remained stationary on the court.

Minnesota seems to have the pieces to compliment Love and Rubio when you look at the athletic games of rookie Derrick Williams and Wes Johnson in particular. But a set of freakish, NBA-ready tools requires more than showing up to make them useful in the league, and Johnson continues to struggle trying to make an impact.

Young, exciting teams can only remain so fun, if the majority of results are added to the loss column. With a little softer schedule ahead in their next two games, Minnesota needs to find a way to win more than they lose next week.

The Minnesota Timberwolves (4-8) had a great opportunity to go into Atlanta and take advantage of a vulnerable Hawks team that just lost its starting big man for 3-4 months. They got off to a great start, but stumbled in the second half and ultimately fell by a final of 93-91.

Minnesota built an 18-point lead in the first half, leading by 11 going into the third quarter, but Atlanta started the second half on a 13-2 run and outscored the T-Wolves 51-38 to win their ninth game of the season and second straight since losing Horford.

Rick Rubio started and had 18 points and 12 assists. Kevin Love had a chance to tie the game, but his shot at the buzzer was off the mark; he finished with a game-high 30 points and 13 rebounds.

The Timberwolves return home to play the Kings on Monday at the Target Center.

The Atlanta Hawks fared well in their first game after learning that star power forward Al Horford will miss at least three months with a torn pectoral muscle in his shoulder, as they defeated the Charlotte Bobcats 111-81. However, that might not prove to be very meaningful, because the Bobcats have lost 10 of 11 games. Josh Smith stepped up in a big way in that game, putting up 30 points and 13 rebounds.

Meanwhile, the Timberwolves will be looking to make it two straight wins in two straight nights, as they defeated the New Orleans Hornets 87-80 on Friday night. Kevin Love poured in 34 points and 15 rebounds in the game, and Ricky Rubio started in the backcourt with Luke Ridnour and finished with 12 points, 6 rebounds, 9 assists, 3 steals and 2 turnovers in 44 minutes. With the win, Minnesota improved to a respectable 2-2 on the road this season, a year after going 5-36 on the road.

The game is scheduled to start at 7:00 p.m. ET.
