Christian Isackson scored three goals and Ben Marshall had three points as the Gophers kicked off their exhibition schedule with a 7-0 win over Lethbridge. Minnesota begins regular season play next weekend against Michigan State

Although it doesn't count in the standings or stat sheet, Christian Isackson and the Gophers got off on the right foot.

Minnesota kicked off the 2012-2013 season with a 7-0 exhibition win over the Lethbridge Pronghorns. Isackson (Buffalo Sabres) led the Gophers with a natural hat trick while goalies Michael Shibrowski and Adam Wilcox (Tampa Bay Lightning) combined for a 16 shot shutout.

After Lethbridge forward Mark Hall received a game misconduct for checking Zach Budish (Nashville Predators) from behind, Isackson went to work. The sophomore scored twice during the power play, both times being set up by Travis Boyd (Washington Capitals) and gave Minnesota a lead they would never relinquish. He came close to getting the third goal twice during the rest of the first period but it wasn't until Nick Bjugstad (Florida Panthers) set him up 1:08 into the second that Isackson could celebrate his first collegiate hat trick.

In fact, tonight was the first time Isackson had scored a point as a Gopher. He spent the majority of his freshman season fighting for ice time and nursing a left hand injury before getting a chance Saturday to play on the top line with Bjugstad and Kyle Rau (Panthers).

25 seconds after Isackson made it 3-0, Sam Warning scored to make it 4-0 and bring the 7,823 at Mariucci Arena to their feet. Not to be outdone, freshman Mike Reilly (Columbus Blue Jackets) finished a magnificent shift by setting up defensive partner Mark Alt (Carolina Hurricanes) for a slap shot from the point that found its way past Pronghorns goalie Dylan Tait.

Ben Marshall (Detroit Red Wings) and Seth Ambroz (Blue Jackets) added goals in the third period to give the Gophers a 7-0 win. It was a satisfying end to a game that saw 31 minutes in penalties handed out between the two teams during the third period.

Minnesota begins the regular season next Friday and Saturday at home against Michigan State. Friday's game begins at 6 p.m. CT while Saturday's is at 8 p.m. Fox Sports North broadcasts both games.

The Minnesota Gophers are starting that year tied with Boston College at the top of the NCAA preseason hockey rankings.

The Minnesota Gophers are tied with the Boston College Eagles atop the preseason NCAA hockey rankings from USA Today/USA Hockey Magazine.

Minnesota were the Western Collegiate Hockey Association (WCHA) regular season and MacNaughton Cup champions last season; they advanced to the Frozen Four before losing to eventual champs Boston College, 6-1 in the semifinals. The Gophers finished the season ranked No. 4 in the nation with a 28-14-1 record.

Boston College received 20 first-place votes to only 12 for the Gophers, but both teams tied with 476 total points in the rankings. The Gophers share the top preseason ranking with the team that eliminated them last season because Minnesota returns an impressive six of their top seven scorers.

Minnesota and Boston College are followed in the rankings by Michigan at No.3 and the Gophers' WCHA rival North Dakota at No. 4; Union College rounds out the top 5. Minnesota will get a chance to take on co-No. 1 Boston College in an early game of the Mariucci Classic, held over the holidays.

Minnesota freshman Connor Reilly injured his right knee over the weekend, and the forward will miss the entire 2012-13 hockey season. Reilly tore his anterior cruciate ligament in an off-ice incident. Reportedly, Reilly hurt his knee at a team party, but head coach Don Lucia wouldn't comment.

"[There is] nothing left to discuss, our release was the truth," Lucia wrote in a short text message.

The release to which Lucia was referring was Minnesota's official statement on the injury, which said that Reilly "suffered the injury after he slipped and fell awkwardly over the weekend." It's unclear what actually happened.

This isn't the first knee issue for Reilly. Last season with the Penticton Vees of the British Columbia Hockey League, his season ended early after surgery to correct a condition in his left knee that caused bone fragments to break off of the joint surface. He had two screws inserted to repair the injured knee and was expected to be ready for the start of the upcoming Minnesota season.

The University of Minnesota announced today that freshman forward Connor Reilly will miss the 2012-2013 season with a knee injury. Reilly, one of three brothers joining the Gophers, slipped and fell awkwardly over the weekend.

After going through the entire 2011-2012 season without any major injuries, Minnesota freshman forward Connor Reilly has bucked the trend three weeks before the Gophers open their 2012-2013 campaign.

The University of Minnesota announced today that Reilly, a freshman from Chanhassen, Minnesota and one of three brothers joining the Gophers, will miss the entire season with a knee injury suffered when he slipped and fell awkwardly last weekend. This comes after Connor had surgery on his injured left knee in March when he was one of eight Minnesotans playing on the Canadian Junior "A" champion Penticton Vees.

"I’m disappointed for Connor. He’s been working very hard to get back on the ice this year from his previous surgery, and this is an unfortunate setback for him. I’m confident that he’ll continue to work hard through this process and support the team in any way he can this season," said Gopher head coach Don Lucia in a statement. "We have a great medical staff here at the University of Minnesota, and I know they will make sure Connor’s surgery and ensuing rehabilitation go well."

Reilly will undergo surgery on his knee although a date has yet to be determined.

The 6'1", 170 lb forward finished 7th in the BCHL last year with 86 points (35G-51A) in 54 games for the Vees. He was expected to be one of several freshman, including twin brother Ryan, to contribute to a forward corp that led college hockey in offense last year. Instead Connor, who is undrafted, looks to take a medical redshirt.

The University of Minnesota released their 2012-2013 television schedule with 34 of 36 games being broadcast on Fox Sports North and BTN. FSN will show 28 games, with 17 being on an alternate channel, and BTN has the remaining 6.

Many Gopher hockey fans were upset when NBC Sports Network unveiled their 24 game college hockey schedule without any Minnesota games (or Minnesota teams for that matter). However, there is a good reason the cable channel was shut out: most games are already claimed.

The Gophers released their television schedule today and 34 of the team's 36 regular season games will be broadcast on either Fox Sports North or BTN. FSN will broadcast 28 games this season, including the regular season opener against Michigan State October 12th, both Mariucci Classic games (which weren't broadcast last year) and the last regular season North Dakota game January 19th as part of Hockey Day Minnesota. Unfortunately, 17 of those games will be on the alternate Fox Sports North Plus channel - which is not as well-distributed or known as the main FSN one - although there is a chance some games get moved if the current NHL Lockout continues.

Also unknown is who will replace Gopher play-by-play voice Anthony LaPanta in calling the games on Fox Sports North. LaPanta was hired in the same position for the Minnesota Wild and a decision on his replacement is expected soon.

BTN will show 6 games this season, up from 4 last year, as the Big Ten transitions into having a new hockey conference next year. This includes the Hockey City Classic outdoor game at Soldier Field against Wisconsin February 17th.

The lone series not shown on television this year is the November 9-10 showdown against Alaska-Anchorage in Anchorage.
